Recently brought a used car (53 plate), very pleased!! But I checked the oil today and found on the dip stick a slight rough brownish substance, is this anything to be worried about?????

test twice by dipping the dipstick, check it, dip again and check. If it still shows a browny colour take the oil cap off and check there, if there is a browny frothy scum in there you might have a leaking head gasket.

is the car an autobox? if so, you didn't check the dipstick on the gearbox did you- that should show a clean red colour.
If the car hadn,t had an oil change for awhile it could be just a sludgy build up,it could also be the head gasket,i would give it an oil change, use some oil flush to clean the inside of the engine
