A friend of mine in the motor trade once told me that ever since Honda started manufacturing the Honda VTEC engine, there have been no reports of engine failures due to the design or construction of the engine.

Is this true? Anyone know otherwise?

well,in a sense he is talking rubbish, the engine is a excellent engine and they have had very little failures with it,but some of the other components on it have made the engine fail, quite a lot,we have had 3 in our garage with major problems because of the oil pump, but i believe they dont count that, but we do.
Yeah I think someone is being economical with the truth. I would like to see their definition of an engine and exactly what's not included.
It was a Jeremy Clarkson quote when he was comparing the S2000 with a Porsche Boxster and BMW Z4.

I have a friend with an Interga and yep, the big end blew up.

My ex mother-in-law had a CRV and the cam snapped.

I agree Honda's make excellent engines and the high revving V-Tec is a drivers dream, but they do break down. Trust me.
every car Ive ever owned has had problems with the engine, all except my CRX.
It was a great little engine but i wouldnt take it to mean that none of them have ever failed.
On my second Honda without any mechanical problems at all.

They are renowned for their reliability which is why I bought one in the first place.

But, I could just be lucky.
clarkson claimed that the v tec part of the engine had never failed or caused a problem
the only prob i have had with any v-tec engine is that on the hr-v the exhaust manifold is prone to cracking which honda rectified with a recall, other than that they seem very good.
