I'm thinking of buying a car i've seen at a garage which doesn't have any road tax at the moment. If i buy it is it illegal to drive it home with no tax? And surely i'll have to wait for my new insurance certificate to come through before i can get it taxed? Could the garage buy tax for it or would they not have insurance on the car so not be able to do it?

i believe that it is illegal for a garage to sell a car without tax. i can't remember where i heard this so i'm prob wrong.
you can tax it on line, go to the dvla web site. then you can tax it before your insurance arrives. dvla will post it to you.
you cannot get tax online without valid insurance in force
The garage - if they are reputable would not sell a car to you without taxing it or seeing a valid insurance certificate or cover note. If your broker is local - you can pick it up from them or your company can post it to you. It all takes a couple of days and the garage would not have the car immediately ready for you in any event - they usually take a few days to valet, tax - MOT and make sure you're legal.
The normal procedure is for the garage to tax and mot it for you, you just give them the cost of the tax and they should do it.

Make arrangements to get insurance then when you pick the car up ring your insurance company and tell them to start the insurance before you drive it from the garage.
