If you take car insurance out when you only have a provisional licence and you still have, say 6 months to run on it when you pass your test and gain a full licence, are you covered, because technically you are a qualified driver (not experienced) but only insured on a provisional licence.

Contact your ins coy, your circumstances will change when you pass your test, so you will not be insured.
You do need to inform your insurance company. When you were a learner you were only driving with an experienced driver in the car, who could have warned you if you were doing anything hazardous. Once you have passed your test you are an inexperienced driver who can drive alone. So as this is a major change in circumstances, inform your insurance company.
