I have been caught doing 61mph in a 30mph zone. What punishment am i likely to receive ?

But i do know that you were travelling {according to your post} at more than twice the recommended speed.
40mph if you hit a small child will almost certainly kill them.

No, freshjive. The Association of Chief Police Officers guidelines only suggest a fixed penalty (3 points and �60) for speeds of up to 50mph in a 30mph limit.
Over that and a fixed penalty is not offered but a summons is issued. The defendant will then be at the mercy of the Bench, whose guidelines I described in my earlier answer.
