I recently bought an x reg hyundai amica, but it only came with 1 key. The previous owner said he'd send the other key on, but he lied. I am going to get a spare cut, but don't know if there is a chip in this key. Don't think the car has an alarm (base model 1.0 Si), so I was wondering whether I could get it cut at Timpsons or somewhere similar, as I have heard that main dealers charge a fortune. Have tried emailing local dealer in Banbury, but they haven't replied. How do I find out if this key is chipped?? Thanks for any advice.
I believe that even the base model Amica was fitted with an engine immobiliser as standard and if this is the case probably requires a transponder chip in the key for deactivation.
Timpson and other keycutters/locksmiths certainly have the equipment and capability to cut and programme copies of transponder keys. They will probably request proof of ownership of the vehicle.
If you key is red? then it's a master key. and you with be able to get a new key cut from it. Your local keycutter will tell you if it is chipped or not with their key programing module.
I believe that is does have an immobiliser. The master keys on Hyundai cars are purple, and having this as your only key would make it easy and cheaper to order a new key from a dealer.
You could try an auto accessory shop if they have the right machines.
