when i turn the key on my ford escort it turns over but wont kick in and after a few times of trying i get a sort of fast clicking sound??? i had it kicked in but then it cut out after i revved it a few times,then tried start again it nearly kicks in but get a clicking noise after a few tries been told my battery is naffed??????????

make sure your battery is connected tightly. if the connections are not tight enough, you can get the clicking you describe.
If all the connections are solid to both the starter motor and the solenoid, then you should suspect the battery. If its more than 3 years old have it cell tested, often one or more cells in the battery fail, and it can no longer supply the high current required to crank the engine.
Flat or knackered battery. The clicking sound is the solenoid on the starter motor trying to engage the starter motor. The solenoid takes less power to operate than the starter.
