Economical small diesel car

I'm considering a golf, 306, ? Any other ideas? don't want to spend more than around 3k, and must have cruise control for the long boring motorway drives ..... YAWN ..... not too sure on the different specs. so please tell me the different models. thanks all.

I doubt you will find a 306 with cruise control, I have never seen one. It is likely to be very rare on Golfs too. Both are good small diesels but there is the trouble small cars don't get cruise.
Its more likely on the next models up (406 and Passat) but that defeats the object of a small car.
You might have to choose between the size and having cruise.
