escort starting problem

i have a 1998 km6 escort zetec and it wont turn over unless i get a jump start from someone but even when i get it to turn over it wont actually kick in and if i take the jump leads off it wont start up at all i have dash lights,indicators etc and also without the jump leads on when i turn the key the fuel pump doesnt kick in either as you normally hear it at the first turn of the key but with the jump leads on it does as i hear it and it turns over but wont kick in still ?????????????

Firstly get your battery checked/charged /replaced. With no jump leads on, do you get all the warning lights when you switch on ignition? If you do, do they dim right out when you go to start? If battery is good and still holds a good charge, check out the alternator. Thats a good start. (so to speak:-))

Forgot to say, not an immobiliser problem is it?
