what usually gets done in a car first year service?
my car is a year old and its just been for its first service at vauxhall and it cost me �127 for new oil and filter and top up my levels. i was fuming!!!

and why was you fuming,dident you ask the price before letting them do it. 1 hours labour �60,oil and filter and top ups �45 ish,plus vat. sounds right to me.

i was fuming cos i thought i was getting a proper service - air in tyres, spark plugs etc etc

Normanthedog is quite right - �127 sounds very reasonable.
To maintain the manufacturer�s warrantee, you must have the car serviced as per the manufacturers service schedule. These days, spark plugs are good for at least 20,000 miles.

Once my car was out of manufacturers warrantee, my annual service has consisted of taking it to a �National� motor chain, for oil & oil filter change for �20. My other advice is to buy a foot pump and keep it in the car.

If it makes you feel any better � you should take comfort from the fact that the garage did not find anything wrong with the car (which was outside of the warrantee due to normal wear & tear/misuse etc), which would have added to the costs.

No doubt there will be item checked that the driver/owner will never see gearbox oil brakes and so on
the price is about right, yes it was only an oil/filter service but if you check the service book or service shhet there will be other items checked

AS most drivers do, all you think you have to do in a first or annual service is change the oil and filter.

There is a lot more to do than that, there are about 20 safety items to check, it all takes time.

Do you never take a look in your service schedule handbook that lists all the service items?

Everyone including those in the industry knows its a blOOdy rip off. Most are checks you can do yourself. The problem is you need a stamp in your service book to stick to your warranty. I know a back street trader who will do an oil and filter change for �20 and put a stamp in your book.

kwicky,there is no way you could do a proper oil and filter change using dealer filter and their oil for �20,cheap crap parts yes,which makes the warrantee invalid.

1st dealer service is a oil and filter change kick the tyres and invoice you for nothing, check the hourly rate you will get a hell of a shock. Sorry mate ex dealership mechanic FT

What a load of crap hymie you not have to have it serviced by dealership to keep the warranty valid providing the garage you use a garage that is company and vat registered and your book is stamped at each sevice. I worked for a company that bought approx. 120 Fords a year and with our own workshop facilites do you think we would send them to a dealership for servicing I think not. Check with Which magazine we had no problem with warranty repairs even though we did the servicing. FT
