Item on the news this morning about making all people of 70 and above re-take their test. This is sensible isn't it?

I'd go further - nobody (especially young men) being allowed to drive until 21, and mandatory re-test for everybody every 5 or 10 years.

Yay or Nay?

defo yay for me if your not good enough to pass every 5-10 yrs then you are not safe to be on the road but , and its a big BUT if it has to be paid for and no doubt it will be then im not so for it driving costs a fortune as it is!
I have no problem with a retest every 10 years, it would keep people up to date with all the latest rules too.

Another thing I would like to see ( but I don't think it will) is tests being taken for larger cars.

My run to work passes several schools, and people are all over the place trying to park 4X4s and large Mercedes.
They probably all passed their test in a Micra etc, and then jumped into cars twice the size.
I agree with that too furrycheeky we have a problem round our school way with that some woman was moaning the other day that she couldnt turn her car round ahem car sorry no TRUCK she has a navarra by the by the school is situated at the end of a very narrow cul-de-sac! absolutely ridiculous!
Although its a good idea, it will never happen. It would be a major vote loser for whichever Government introduced it, the cost would be astronomic and there are already not enough examiners to test new drivers, let alone the 30 million odd existing ones.
Im 17 and a careful driver, stop making assumptions!!
It did not say they would have to take a driving test !
Its this bit i didnt like the sound of!!!!! :

Tar us all with the same brush y dont u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have to tar you all with the same brush mate - your age group has the most accidents. This is a statistical fact and is why young men pay a fortune for car insurance.

I'm sure you are very good, but there are far too many of your peers who are not. As a rule 17 year olds do not possess the maturity to be in charge of a car (at 17 you have still not reached the majority and are therefore a child or young adult - whatever, the fact is you aren't an adult).

So whilst you may be very good, far too many are not and that is why you must all be tarred with the same brush. The government has recognised this which is why the limit is shortly to be pushed up to 18, but in my view this is still too young.
This was suggested recently - and I said there are over 40 million drivers in the UK - that would be an extra 4 million driving tests every year.

The system just couldn't provide it.
i think you should have to spend a certain amount of 'hours' behind the wheel before you are allowed to take your test, be restricted to smaller engined cars for the first couple of years, have to take motorway lessons before being allowed on the motorway and re-testing at intervals
