Having read that there is no American Highway Code, has anyone any idea what a flashing orange light means on the American roads? I think it is usually near a junction and hangs in the centre of the road. Someone suggested it means there is a school nearby.

It could mean that in off peak times the traffic lights at the junction are not in use, and you are to use a give way system to negotiate the junction.
It is equivalent to a four way Yield sign. It means proceed through the junction with caution, giving way to traffic from the right.
