when i arrived home from work today,the exhaust seemed to be blocked up with what seemed like long hair or fibres,whats all that about?

They're from the baffles in your back box (which needs replacing).

As Buenchico says it is a fibre packaging escaping from your back box due to corrosion in the perforated piper that goes through your rear silencer, this can build up in the back box and seal it so causing your engine to stop running.
