I doubt very much that you have a carburetor fitted to your P reg Fiat.

Sounds like an expensive engine fault which may cost more to fix than the car is worth.

Get it to a garage ASAP, before more damaged is caused.

Ive just been told that the diaphragm has gone on the carb, but had so many people say different things, someone even mentioned it was the exhaust system! its more of a rattling than a banging noise, like a football rattle?
Have you looked underneath at the exhaust?
Question Author
yes, defo needs a new exhaust but reluctant to pay for one if the engine has something seriously wrong with it, previously to all that I was putting more petrol in than usual and it was slow to pick up at junctions, it also recently had a new cambelt tensioner put on and plugs changed, still drives but not really over 20, and sometimes cuts out, not that im driving it at the mo anyway, everyone who takes a look checks something different and is still stumped.
I think it is shagged
Sorry, that is a highly technical term that mechanics use
Question Author
ha, I'm beginning to think it is too, serves me right for getting an automatic i suppose (and a fiat)
Personally fiats have got better. The best thing about them is the cheap and readily avaiialble parts. But urs sounds like it has a major prob
...could be a chipped or damaged cylinderswhich is causing the power loss and the noise is where the vehicle is running on 3 or 2 cylnders instead of 4.

Happened to my friend's Fiat.

Take it to a local garage, NOT a Fiat dealer as they will charge you the earth.

Being P reg, and depending on the mileage it may become non economical to repair thus requiring your to scrap it.
fiat = fart in a trance. I guess its living up to its name babe.
Hope you get it fixed at not too much cost though.
Fiat = Fix It Again Tony
Fiat = Foolish Italians Art of Transport
