28 Answers
I'm planning a trip to liverpool (woolton) from london... the AA route planner says it will take me 4 hours, and 2 minutes (v.exact! lol) and is 218 miles away... Basically I want some advice on how much petrol my car will need/use/etc... its a newish, but very much driven, Vauxhall Frontera, 2 ltr... I think 30 is half a tank..im not to sure! Any ideas? I would fly but it seems that nobody flies to liverpool unless they're from the isle of man! plus i keep getting quotes for 300 odd! Theres, two adults and a toddler in the car...with just hand luggage i guess? Any ideas? Thanks x x x

One of ours that's used regularly's got a 2ltr. engine, and we'd easily do a journey of that length if we filled the tank up. That'd be carrying two adults and two children - PLUS luggage - with petrol over. I think using the car'd be your cheapest way of getting from A to B though, and remember, your journey's likely to take you longer than the AA route planner states, due to any stops on the way, and traffic hold-ups.
A quick web search suggests that you won't get much more than 30mpg out of your Frontera. So you're looking at using about 7-and-a bit gallons each way. With fuel at around a fiver per gallon, that means that you'll probably use somewhere around 35 to 40 of fuel in each direction.
You're correct in your assertion that there are no direct flights between London and Liverpool:

I don't know how far in advance your journey is, but (if you can travel off-peak and book in advance) you might be able to get some bargain rail fares. I've just taken a look at the National Rail website and entered journey details (between Euston and Liverpool) for a date well in advance at off-peak times. (I chose around midday on Monday 16 June). The single fare for one adult is just 13. (Under-5s travel free). It's a direct service, with no need to change trains. Perhaps it might be worth investigating, to see if there's anything suitable on offer for the dates you wish to travel?

I dont see why a 2-litre shouldnt do 35mpg on that sort of run with that load. It depends on whether you cruise at 85mph or 70mph, when youre able to, that is. Those 50mph - limit motorway stretches will improve economy but lengthen the journey. Ive got a 1.6 Escort which does low-twenties to the gallon around town (these are mostly 2 or 3 mile journeys, mind you).
I drove it down to Kent and back twice recently, about 280 miles each way. The first time it did an amazing 44mpg, the second time a bit less (it was loaded up a bit more), but still over 40mpg.
The last trip took about 5 hours both ways. There were delays on the M25 and at Junctions 6 10 on the M1 which cost me about 45 minutes. I only stopped once each time ... if you stop for coffee/snacks/petrol/toilet 3 times that will obviously add quite a bit!
The other thing is ... if you can travel on a Sunday there are far fewer trucks on the road, which helps.
I agree, it is tedious driving that far even if traffic conditions are good!
