Should you wash a soft-top roof?

I have recently bought a new MX5 and am not sure whether the roof should be washed or whether it will do it any harm.
I usually take my car to be hand-washed and don't use automatic car washes. (I'm not lazy - I live in a flat and doing it myself is virtually impossible!!)
