What are those couple of cables usually

running across middle of half of the road and usually go into a box near lamp posts. Is that a sort of system to count number of cars passing or something else?????? Any idea, Thanks.

The rubber road tubes affixed to the road surface are attached to Automatic Traffic Counter (ATC) recorders for traffic survey purposes. The recorders are often secured to a lamppost or signpost.

A single pneumatic tube is sufficient to count the number of axles passing over it, however paired tubes can also determine vehicle speeds as part of the survey but are not applicable for legal purposes i.e in the prosecution of speeding offences.

I was always told to watch out when you see those as there is a chance of a speed trap being set up in that area in the week or 2 following
