Hi, I have a Clio on a V plate.
I was driving along I just changed gear put my foot down to overtake a lorry and the car screeched to a halt. I called out the AA and the person said the engine had seized. However, the car is well maintained and it had plenty of oil in it. When I pointed this out to the AA man, he said on this type of car the flywheel come off, wedges on the crankshaft, and seizes the engine. Can anyone tell me if this is correct and how to check? Alternatively, is the something ells that might cause this?

AA/RAC are full of advice which isnt always correct..causes a lot of problems within car part sales when they refuse to take items back ,especially electrical ,when advised by the AA that this was the fault and it didnt cure the problem
If it was the cambelt you would know. there would be a loud bang and you may even notice a few dents in your bonnet where the pistons have popped up. your car would not screech to a halt, but it would feel like you had turned the car off whilst driving and it would just drift silently until it stopped.

get it towed to renault. it sounds like it may be costly though
"a loud bang"?? "dents in the bonnet due to the pistons popping out"?? WHAT A LOAD OF ***** YOU ARE TALKING MATE!! I CAN ASSURE YOU WHEN A TIMING BELT GOES THERE IS NO BANG AND THERE IS NO PISTONS WHICH POP OUT AND DENT THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BONNET!!! all that will happen is a small high pitched whining noise and then a few popping noises where the valves make contact with the pistons and then you freewheel the car until it stops
As above there is no or very little sound when the cambelt breaks.
