When should a 1.8 beetle have the cam belt changed?

I have done 64k miles in my 1.8 beetle and have been advised that I need the cam belt changed..I know this is expensive so want to be sure that I do need it done...how can I tell and what are the recommendations in terms of mileage?

Hi, at the lastest 55000, Expensive??? you will find out how expensive if the belt goes, Sorry if I sound Harsh but If you let this car go on much longer you will pay the price, Whilst you are getting the job done get them to replace the Axcilary belts as well, EG Fan belts.
