All the classic signs of a slipping/worn/damaged/failing clutch.
Def a knackered clutch, the mot would not cover that because it is not safety or enviromentally relevant.
Perhaps the Catalytic Converter?

cheers for the answers if it does turn out to be a clutch whats the damage for a new one about
the eggy smell is you cat converter, not cheap to replace either! my car is only a yr old and im still getting the eggy smell now and again but its completely common in new cars but on an older car its not such a great thing i woulndt think and your right about the sulphur! alo you could be getting dirty petrol?? there is so much going around even from what we seem to think are reputible filling stations, we had a similar prob and have changed where we buy our fuel. either way i think your gonna have to get to a garage and have it looked at.
Would a dodgy cat not have caused the car to fail its mot? Still sounds like the clutch is slipping to me, a burning clutch lining stinks.
As for how much...pass, I haven't replaced one for years, sorry.
Referring to my last answer, one of my clan has just pointed out that your cat. converter will be red hot and smelly if you are working the engine hard to get anywhere. Bear in mind that if the car was performing properly and you were driving at speed you would leave the smell behind.
Makes sense to me......
