Ethel - Mazda 3 is now available in 3 door, I test drove one. Insurance is high on it no matter which model you opt for and it has high service costs.
I recommend a Vauxhall Corsa. I'm now on my 3rd having previous driven a BMW but had to change because of sons on my insurance. I've never had any problems with any of them. My daughter drives my 2004 one with 65K miles on the clock and she just sold my previous 1999 one in November which had 85K miles on the clock - it's still going strong. There is a wide range of trim/price options and if you are a civil servant/local gov oficer/work in education etc. you can get Vauxhall Partners which gives you a very generous discount off selected models - just ask you nearest Vauxhall Dealer if you are eligible.
