What is the difference between PLG and Petrol car as on tax disc application?

The answer is that DVLA in their wisdom introduced some new categories a few years ago:
PC = Petrol Car DC = Diesel Car

These categories basically only apply to cars registered since the changes were introduced (2005/06 approx.).

If you have an older car which had "PLG" in its tax disc, then that car will continue to be classified "PLG" at each tax disc renewal.

There are one or two exceptions, i.e. alternative fuel vehicles, or cars taken off the road for a period of time etc etc, but given that most of us drive either petrol or diesel cars, the only change you would notice is either PC or DC on your tax disc.

Further to my previous post, I've actually found out that the dates I gave (2005/06) are wrong! DVLA introduced the changes as far back as 1st March 2001.

And there is a 3rd category : AFC (Alternative Fuel Car).
