Hi to,
you carbuffs out there
I have just bought a ford escort 1.6 finesse R reg 16v for my son .The car has done 72000 miles the engine seems lively ,quiet and the whole car is in very good condtion. After covering 200 miles it has started stuttering at 70mph plus , seeming to hold back like bad fuel going through it although the tank is half full any ideas. Also at what mileage should the cam belt be changed and what mpg should he expect .Thanks

The misfire - if that's what it is - may be an ignition lead starting to break down, it might be a spark plug or any number of components. The car probably just needs a good service gary. You'll have to spend some money and replace all the filters, fluids and ignition components and then it should be OK. Also bear in mind that it's unfair to ask an old car with a fairly small engine to do 70mph+. It's already protesting and your son will eventually find himself on the hard shoulder with a blown engine.
The cam belt should be changed as soon as possible. Like all the other components it probably hasn't been changed for a long time.

Hi Gary, Take the car back to the seller / dealer, explain what you have stated here & tell them you want the problem sorted or return the car as "not fit for the purpose of intention" in other words the car is not runing right, give the garage the chance to sort out the problem, regards the cam belt & tensions they want do ASAP like tomorrow. there is a chance that there is water in the fuel.
