Hi Gary
on a HGV you have the norm 5 forward + reverse, on to or the side of the gear stick you have a "up" down button, 1st is not often used as the Lorry's have that much power unless you are on a very very steep hill to take off in 2nd, you set off as norm in 2nd low if you want you can raise the button to 2nd high, when you are ready to change from 2nd high within that change you can drop the button the same time as you change the gear from low & the gear stick to 3rd low, I hope I have not confused you, in other words you can split every gear up to 16 Including reverse which obviously you do not do, there was a survey many years ago about the start off with a HGV & a porsche car, If t was possible for the HGV unit to hold traction on a standing start it would leave a porsche standing, that survey was done by Fiat Trucks. If you see any HGV driver just ask him / her can you view the gear box layout & I think you will find anyone will show you.
