petrol car starts like a diesel

i've got an 02 golf 1600se when starting it up it sounds like a diesel even though its petrol, its newly serviced and makes no diference. thanks

Does it have hydraulic tappets? If so the engine may sound "clattery" for a few seconds as the oil is pumped up to the tappets. If it goes quite after that then there's nothing to worry about.
