Have received a ban for 6 months and a fine. Do I have to re take my test to get the licence back? Have looked the certain web sites but all seems to a bit vague

No but you have to reapply for your licence at the time. There are occasions when a retest is necessary but that is only if ordered by the magistrate.

As R1Geezer states, you don't need to retake your test unless the magistrates passed an order stating so.
