Ducati igniton electrics problem

Don't know if this is the right place to post a question relating to motorbikes but here goes. I have an M600 Ducati and have been having a real problem with starting and igniton. The starter solenoid keeps failing so I am having to replace it, did this and now the ignition is not sparking at the plug. I had the bike started by shorting out the solenoid but now nothing. I found a loose earth lead off the engine and reattached it but that didn't help so now I am looking at the "kill" switch as a possible culprit. Anyone got any ideas what might be the problem.
