The 14 days grace thing always was a myth but nowadays taking funds out of the motorists` pockets [AKA Fleecing] seems to be a national past-time
Quig! Get a new one!
There is no period of grace at all, and it is now a fixed fine!
Also, the long standing problem of video reading passing number plates and leashing the numbers up to the DVLC to see who is taxed and who is not, may have been solved. They've been trying for thirty years,so it is about time. This means, as i was that you can be stopped after your car has been video'd. Seconds laterr and not days later.
The 14day ruled applied back in the dark age when car tax could be renewed for 4month periods which had specific starting dates. To avoid congestion at the tax offices a 14 day period after expiry was allowed. This of course ceased when the present system was introduced but some elder drivers continued to believe that the period of grace had been carried over to the new system. So it is in fact a myth with a basis of truth
This is an Excise which is not in fact anything to do with the Police, they merely report it to DVLA as agents of Her Majesty. Whilst there is no period of grace the law states that you will not be prosecuted if you 'back tax' within 14 days of the start of the month in which the vehicle is used on the road. This is much the same as the 5 days allowed to produce your driving documents. Did you know you commit an offence by failing to produce them on demand? Yes you do!!
