Under the Limitation Act 1980, if you are making a claim against someone else you have:
6 years to claim for property damage
3 years to claim for injuries
from the date of the incident. No need to rush then!!

There is no set time limit, unless it is specified in your Policy schedule, or your Insurance Company's Terms of Business.
You don't have to tell them at all. If it's not your fault there is no need. They may well like you to tell them but you don't have to.
