The "outside temperature" display on my "p" reg astra is reading 45.1 degrees. It's near freezing outside. Anybody know what's wrong and where is the "sender" unit situated.  I don't mean the engine temp!

Meggles,

It may not be wrong at all, but displaying temp in Fahrenheit - 45.1 is about 7C which is not unrealistic. Unfortunately can't help you with switching to Celsius The thermocouple (the bit that reads the temperature) are commonly mounted in the door mirror housing. A little lump on the underside of the housing would indicate this to be true for the Astra.

The sensor may be behind the front bumper.  On my Vectra it registers warmer than ambient when the car's been run, the engine is warm, and it has then been parked.  It does sound, though, as if the sensor has failed.
Ewood27 is dead right, it is mounted in the front bumper, if you look underneath at the nearside corner, you will see a small sensor sticking out slightly or just flush.
