"If unable to put the vehicle in Neutral, turn the engine OFF. This will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.
o If the vehicle is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly and steadily push the button for at least three seconds to turn off the engine. Do NOT tap the Engine Start/Stop button.
o If the vehicle is equipped with a conventional key-ignition, turn the ignition key to the ACC position to turn off the engine. Do NOT remove the key from the ignition as this will lock the steering wheel. "
it seems these people died through not knowing the basics of how the car operates.

Would have thought that if the accelerator is stuck, would have thought that you could stop the car by applying the brakes, or the handbrake (slowly) or by turning the ignition off, or by wrench the car out of gear. .
A slightly related recall in Amercia was to do with Lexus floormats moving about and sticking under the pedals, nobody seems to have had the gumption to just move it back with their feet. What about older cars where the floor mats were never secured??

i thought that but if you look on web sites related to these accidents the brakes dont work very well due to some engine and vacuum prob, they wont hold the car at all
please watch the repeat of "total recall-the Toyota story" on bbc2 at12.10 am Wednesday morning, it seems they were blaming the carpets but that was not the fault at all

do people not know how to change down gears to slow down anymore? Oh, I forgot, the stupid teaching now is not to do that, just apply the brakes until the car is stopped, then change gear into 1st.
So, maybe it's the teaching at fault, I have coped with various faults in my years of driving and never had a problem, including a snapped clutch cable (matched gears all the way home, stalling at traffic lights and starting in gear), an accelerator stuck on full (ignition off and change down gears), failed brakes (change down to 2nd and make the engine scream and pulling on the handbrake!) and a blowout.
