I don't think they include the weekend in those 5 days. So it's only 1 day late and they have no control over the post office.

I knew they wouldn't include the weekend and in hindsight I wish I'd just gone to the post office to get it directly but is it now illegal for me to drive my car or is it taken into account that I have actually paid for it?
Adding to what ummmm has said - Ring the DVLA to find out when it was posted and you should be able to work out 5 working days. I will say that before ringing make sure you've got your licence to hand as will need it, and always helps if you have counterpart just as backup :)

There was a post on here a few weeks back about it. The majority said that you'll be safe to drive. Tax and insurance are on a data base so it's very unlikely you'll be stopped. If you are then produce proof of purchase and they can check there and then with the DVLA.

Thanks all, just managed to find the answer on the DVLA website, partly through ginas link! It says that as long as you have applied before the current one has expired you have a five day grace period after the current one has expired and you should continue displaying the old one until the new one arrives!
I am quite sure that you will be able to drive (with tax disc in post) and not be stopped for the ANPR flagging you as having no tax because effect, you do have current upto date Road tax as you have paid for it but just not got the disc -

That's what I thought northermonkey but just wanted to make doubly sure!
yeah, dont blame you.
The14 day grace period is an urban myth Redhelen.

There never was one, but as some posters have said, there is now 5 days grace for displaying, as long as it has been bought online or by phone.
