A colleague of mine has just been charged with driving without a licence. He is 51 and assumed his licence lasted til 65. HOWEVER, the plastic card portion of the new style licence has an expiry date that bears no relation to your age limit. his ran out in January. You get no reminder from DVLA. Checked mine and Ive only 4 months left to run.

you change your photo card every 10 years,
I think this was high-lighted before. a lot of "early" new style licences have expired.

mine's an ancient paper one.

are you taking yours to Brands Hatch then? :o)
I think they actually used to last until you were 70 as my old one was due to expire in 2018.
Unfortunately this plastic thing I now have runs out in 2017.
it was 70 for the old style license, not 65 (not that it makes any difference here)
I had to send my old paper licence away last year, for a change of address, when we moved.
I received, both plastic and new paper licence, which both show an expiry date,of the eve of my seventieth birthday.
DG, if it's less than 10 years until you are 70 it will show your 70th as the expiry date. my current one shows an expiry date on the front of 2019 (under section 4b) but it shows my entitlements on the back expire in 2042 (when I will be 70)
well it will if you're within 10 years of your 70th birthday.....
so if mine runs out in 2017 does my next one run out in 2018 when I'm 70?
yep Craft, that will be annoying as you'll have to pay for a renewed license that will last a year!
bloody stupid system..........I only got a new type as I changed address....:-(
i to was caught out with this in january, got stopped at a vehicle checkpoint and because i didn't have my wallet that day i didn't have my license so the officer ran a check on my license and it came back that it had expired.

not only was that a shock to the system i then got my car impounded and the other half had to go to the local police station, get her insurance and license checked and had to pay £150 to get the car back and all of this because my photocard license had expired a month earlier!

The thing that really annoyed me was i'd lost my license and got a new one 2 months earlier so you would of thought they could of just renewed it then

oh yes and i'm in court in August charged with driving without a license
thanks versys, just checked mine after seeing your post, it runs out on 21 9 10. I was under the impression it ran till i was 70. better see what i have to do to get it renewed. regards lowry
I really can't understand how anyone can be caught out by this. it clearly states on the front of the license when it expires and the DVLA send you a renewal pack two months before it expires.
"The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will send you a renewal application pack two months before your photo is due to expire."

It is not a simple matter of extending the licence as it is the photo that has to be replaced after ten years. If a licence has been lost, the period can not be extended until a new photo is provided.
When i applied for a new license i sent a new photo, this was 2 months before mine expired and i didn't receive a renewal pack obviously the system has confused itself in my case
Thankyou very much Chuck.
Yes I am within 10 years of my seventieth and as you say,all my entitlements show the
same date as the front,in my case.
I will make a note to remind myself, nearer the time.
Regards dg

I guess alot of people just stash the licence away and assume it will probably outlast most of us, or until you need incontinance pants!
Clearly we should all take a leaf out of your book.
Incidenatlly DVLA are not obliged to send out renewal pack for the plastic portion. The paper part lasts way beyond the plastic and that is what they will follow up.
Just because it is expired, it is not revoked and he still has an entitlement. He'd get a summons anyway, not a charge.
