Whilst holding the plastic handle of the screw driver, hold it very close to earth, e.g. engine block, and get someone to turn the engine over. See if there is a spark.
Let me know.
Hi, I've got a 1999 VW Golf 1.6SR MK4 and have been told the engine is similar to the GTI 8 valve 96 model. I have just come back from my mechanics after suffering the same problem... I.E, wont start when warm. My friend ran a diagnostic on my Golf, and found a problem with the temperature sender (not sure whether oil or water..) Anyway, he replaced it (22) and everything is fine!
Hope this helps!

Strange but true... I had a similar problem... it would cut out at full speed on the motorway!! really scary. Diagnostics could not pick it up in the end a BMW dealer looked through engine with a magnyfying glass and found that my relay switch to the main frame had a hair line fracture which when it got hot expanded and ense cut out, yet it would always start again
