I really enjoy the Top Gear expeditions, (accross South America, across Africa and to the North Pole) but I'm not so naive as to believe it's just the three lads on their own. How many people and vehicles actually travel on these expeditions.

well I know on the polar one they had 2 more trucks like Jeremy's follow him but no idea how they followed the Hamster on the dog sled, probably with snow mobiles of some sort.
Did you know that Noel Edmonds used to present Top Gear?
Yes, and Angela Rippon!
Just watched the one where they went through the rain forrest in three clapped out 4x4s. There's a telling shot from inside Jeremy's Range Rover where you can see about eight other crew members watching them.

Top Gear is primarily an entertainment rather than factual programme so is filmed with those sensibilities in mind ... I recalll the recent trip across some hot african (I think) state where Jeremy's vehicle had to edge along a mountain pass as another vehicle came the other way ... funny how one minute the camera showed close up shots of various parts of the vehicle and Jeremy but next a long range shot from several hundred metres away showed no cameras close by whatsoever!

The "races" e.g. car against climber or mountain bikes must have been filmed with enough cameras and set-ups to seriously damage the licence fee if you believe they were all done in one take.

Phoney ... but entertaining all the same :-)
Ray Mears sometimes shows the crew deliberately and there are about a dozen members with about 2 ton of kit! I still enjoy the stunts and they are pretty interesting.
Even though it is entertaining, remember when they went to the usa the second time, and they only had a licence to make a factual documentary . . . .
