Apparently it is for Grand Tourer (injection) and I agree, it does sound inappropriate on such a small car, and others such as the Golf. Such a badge tends to have more 'sporty' connotations...
I'm led to believe that GTI used by Volkswagen refers to the name of the styling house that is employed to make the cars more sporty.  They were the first to use the badge anyway.  For other makes its a way of flogging off sexed-up versions of cheaply manufactured naff cars (Ford Escort, Peugeots, Renaults, etc.) by stealing the GT/GTi name and claiming that it means Grand Tourer Injection.

Collins English Dictionary defines "GT" as "gran turismo" which is Italian for "great touring".

Also agree it seems a strange title for smaller cars - but is that because were are comparing them to today's "People Carriers" and the ease/luxury of touring in these vehicles?
Remember there is a long heritage of classic small cars with a GT badge e.g. MGB GT.

GTi - usually a boy (or girl) racer with no road sense.
i know wot the ti means but as for the g i aint got a clue the ti mean turbo injection as in the 205 1.9 gti..
