A screeching sound is coming from the 'belt' area of the engine on my car.  I did have the Auxilary belt changed by a Peugeot dealer (the mechanic pointed out that the problem may come back and this would mean the other belt would need to be changed.  He said the belt which goes around the pully's for the air con' etc), which fixed the problem for about a week.

Does anyone know if this is causing damage to my car?

Also, how much would it cost me for this new belt?

Many, many thanks in advance.

The screeching from a belt is very often because it is a bit loose and needs tightening.

Thanks TomW

Can I ask a Peugeot garage to tighten this?

Would this not damage the engine?

Do you know how this happens? Is it because the belt loosens from heat?

If you've had a new belt then it will need tighening after a week or so because the belt stretches. This should only need to be done once. It won't be damaging your engine. Only damage will be if u don't get it fixed and u rev it all the time to stop the noise. then ur just revin ur engine too much.
i to have a peugeot 206 with a screeching noise coming from the engine, two garages told me it was the cam belt. i then took it to the peugoet garage who stripped the engine and found it to be the alternator belt and the main reson for this was the pulley. it cost me 309 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!
