hi albags reason iam asking was that my elderly uncle just had one fitted today and was charged over £300. i see some new ones on ebay but prices vary up to £200. i just thought that £300 was a bit excessive. tomorrow i will get his car details reg engine size etc and phone a few motor factors to see what the average price of a starter is for his model. thanks for your reply and link

That's a bit over the top.
Full retail may well be £200 for a motor, but another £100 to fit it is excessive.

it seems a bit excessive but £200 + labour + vat @17.5 woudnt be far off ,£300.00, Unfortunately parts prices can vary so much between models and they are not relative to the price of the vehicle, if the car was worth £15,000 you probably wouldnt be asking the question, but it takes the same amount to produce the part & the same labour regardless of the value of the vehicle.
