Apart from fleet managers and hire firms and other commercial reasons, why would a private indvidual buy a new car? Ok lottery winners and rich people accepted. I'm talking about your average joe. I mean look around the car park aywhere and 90% of them will be newish probably on tick, people effectively paying a second mortgage on something that will depreciate to zero. Madness absolute madness, can you imagine buying some shares that you know will fall to 0?

Makes me laugh when people say they 'own' their own home

Er, no you don't.......you'll actually own it once your 25 years (or however many years your mortgage is) of HP payments are up.

Try and sell it now shazza, bargain?? I think not!
if no-one bought the brand new cars then the only second hand ones would be high mileage fleet cars

They buy them because they want to, they can afford it, they want a car no-one else has had, the latest model, the longer warrenty etc
My husband and I are 63 and have just bought our first brand new car, we didn't go to the garage to buy brand new, but the offer was to good to miss, it was reduced from £19,000 to £14,000, we also received a loyalty bonus for always buying from same garage and got much more than we expected for our old one, working all the sums out we got a better deal than the second hand cars we had previously looked at, and are very happy,
