How many types of belts are there in a car engine?

Depends on the type and age of the engine. My car has one belt known as a serpentine belt that runs just about everything such as the alternator, the power steering pump and the coolant pump. Other cars will have this and a cam-belt that drives the cam shaft (sometimes a cam-chain is fitted instead of a belt). Other cars may have three belts.

I'm confuse whether Cam belt is the same as Timing belt.

It's the same and it's not visible as the other belt(s) are...

You can have:

Cambelt or Timing chain (if OHC)

Alternator belt or fan belt (if longitute engine)

Power Steering belt

Air conditioning belt

Obviously some cars utilise only one or two belts to power the power steering, alternator, waterpump, air con etc.

DAF's used to have drive belts

Very good Jenny Tools I remember the variomatic DAF's - mind you you must have an odd car if you have got a seatbelt/lapbelt in the engine.

Rover Metro (100) automatics have 'Constantly Variable Transmission' which is a metal belt and similar to the DAF variomatics.

some earlier types of ABS systems were operated by a belt between the pump and the driveshaft

what belt do i have to replace if the car is make screeching noises? is it the alternator belt or the timing belt
