Which Lane?

I'm hoping someone can settle an argument for me.....

You are approaching a roundabout and you want to take the second exit. On your approach, the road splits into two lanes that have no directional markings. Do you automatically use the left hand lane for the second exit or do you use the right hand lane, depending on how far round the second exit is?

You use the inside lane by doing that if you make a mistake you are not endangering or could cause a crash by cutting across If you where the outside lane.

6 years ago. And my instructor always told me to take the left lane for the second exit whereas my sister was told to treat it as a clock face and if the exit is after 12 o'clock then you should use the right lane.

There is no blanket answer it depends on the layout number of exits and road configuration leading on and off the roundabout. Let's take a classic case of exits at 9/12/3 then take the left hand lane for 9 and 12 and the right for 3. however if the exit from the 12 oclock exit is 2 lanes then it is acceptable top go straight on from the right hand approach line providing you do not swap lanes and back again iin the process. This is just 2 examples of an infinate number of possibilities.

If you use the right hand lane your also potentially blocking the way for someone turning right or using the 3rd exit.
A generally sensible approach is to use the left hand lane whenever it is clear and only use the right hand lane when there is a slower moving vehicle in it as you approach the roundabout or you are 100% sure that there are two lanes exiting the roundabout.

If there are TWO lanes OUT on that exit, you can use either.
If there is ONE lane out, you must use LH approach lane.

So let me give you a scenario, in which I totally believe I am in the right....

Every morning I approach a roundabout. There are 3 exits at almost exactly 9, 12 and 3. I have to take the second exit (12) and so use the left hand lane. However, tons of other people use the right hand lane so we wait at the roundabout side by side until it is clear to move and both proceed to move forward to the second exit meaning I usually end up getting cut up so they can get in. Who is right?

No dual carriage ways, all single lane A roads and there are no merging lanes on any of the exits.
