I forgot to say it's a 1.8 P reg. It's not snapped but several teeth
have shredded on it. It seems to be completely visible. and there seems to be a major misfire which could possibly be just the plugs and leads. Or could the knackered cam belt be causing that. It's not that i don't want to take it to a garage but it's last option as i'm skint cause i've just lost my job.

it had been misfiring for about 4 days then it got really sluggish until i got to about 30-35mph then the misfire wnet intermittant
Renaults are notoriously difficult to do timing (cam)belts on, i even know of Renault mechanics who will not touch one as a homer, but even if it's not a Renault, it's not a simple job, it has to be set just right and tensioned the same, to slack it will fly off, too tight ad it will strip all the teeth off it in one revolution, getit out of alignment and you will bend every valve in the engine, if you are somewhat knowledgeable about engines, then get a ahynes manual and by all means give it a go, but if you have never ebven opened the bonnet, then go to a garage, maybe lookig about 60 or so, as oppposed to a new engine
sorry didnt realy read the second post, are you sure its the cam belt you are looking at??, it should NOT be visible unless the timing cover has been removed, and if there are ANY teeth mising on a timing belt then DO NOT EVEN TURN THE ENGINE OVER, what you are describing could well be the auxilliary drive belt, does it go around the power steering pimp and alternator/, if so thats not a bad belt to chnage, just have to get the old off anf the new on, I believe they are self tensioning on the lagunas, therefore there should be a springloaded pulley wheel find out what way it moves to release the tension and bob's you uncle
