Is it 4w or 2w drive ? It goes backwards ok in snow but wheel spins forward. Can't drive it home in reverse :)

The "Quattro" modeling indicates all wheel drive. I'm not sure what you mean by "wheel spins forward" unless you're saying that when going forward the front wheels spin. In which case, you're applying to much power (and torque). Try starting off slowly. Additionally, all four-wheel and all-wheel drive cars, at least here in the U.S. are drive-biased to the rear wheels. Meaning, that the rear wheels begin driving (or spinning) before a certain torque value is reached to begin driving the front wheels...
If it is a quattro (not just badged as such), then it will be 4wd. Trouble is, any 4wd system is limited by grip, and in the UK, many manufacturers do not fit tyres suitable for snow. As Clanad mentioned, driving style could also be a factor. If the car is manual, pull away in 2nd or third, and apply power gently and gradually
