Why did USA deide on LH Drive for cars?

Looking at old film of buggys in USA just before the advent of cars, it seemed that they usually drove the buggy from the Right Hand side with their passenger sitting on the left.

So why opt for Left hand drive in cars right at the beginning?

ha ha I hadn't spotted that bit.

Bet that will go down well with the police in the local country...

This reminds me of the time when I was driving in Florida , and got lost .

A police patrollman after giving me directions , finally quipped '' be careful now , given that you Brits drive on the wrong side of the road ''
