The mater is thinking of one, excellent condition and priced at £2k for a 1.8T petrol automatic 2002. Looks like its a good buy as the market suggests 2.5 to 3.5 as the spread on age and mileage. It has 120k on the clock.

The reason for the low price is that the supplier to the local 'dealer' (he has a good reputation) has died and his family are having a major row about something. The son has offered the 'local dealer' six cars at knock down price, some of which is obviously being passed on to my motherfor a quick turnover of stock.

My question is does any ABer have experience of A3s and their dependability, driveability etc etc?.

No personal experience but I take it you've found the Honest John site:

Sorry here's the older one.

Apparently it's mechanically very similar to the Golf and Seat Leon

i have a newer a3 and its absolute brill, no probs with it in 3 years, just changed a few bulbs thats all.
very comfy, built good
I have an older (2000) manual, slightly fewer ks. It's been great; lovely to drive. Only drawbacks: needs premium unleaded petrol and quite expensive for service and parts (in Aus) but may be cheaper in the UK.

thanks all - it gets picked up tomorrow - might whip it in for a cam belt change if the guy selling it can't find out how long the current one has been on.....but it is in excellent condition.

She was interested in a Vauxhall Corsa but thank god that was sold from underneath her feet..............
