While the motives are good do you think this will eventually feel like those License fee letters (which seem to be randomly distributed)?

Those who have failed to tax/insure properly will face the following actions: (when the new law comes into action)

A fixed penalty fine of £100
Court prosecution (and a fine of up to £1,000)
The vehicle being clamped, seized & destroyed

Is this much different from now? And is it going to change those who are driving uninsured - or just catch those out who haven't declared their car as SORN?

In theory it's easy - individual cars need insurance MOT and tax - all systems are computerised if a vehicle isn't SORNed and one runs out you get a fine in the post like a speeding ticket.

In practice it can be harder to inforce. Cars are registerred to companies, real or fraudulent with PO boxes. They are registered to false addresses, they have cloned number plates etc. etc. etc

The whole sorn thing is largely irrelevant, that's not the issue. The main change here is that even cars parked off road can be seized etc if un insured.

You can't crush a car parked off road if it's been SORNed insured or not

Yes jake, quite right what I was saying is that they are targetting the uninsured even on their drive ways. They would no doubt check if it's been sorned first but the eorts they are aiming this at are unlikely to even be registered let alone sorned.

Every car that has up to date car Insurance should display on their windscreen a disks simular to the road tax but larger, provided by the Insurers only, If the person is found with no insurance an instant ban of 3 month/ 6 months & so on.

why a disc? plod doesn't look in the windscreen, serves no purpose, they just run the plate..
