What colour smoke?  White, blue or black?
Question Author
white, like a fog...
White smoke - no problems, it's when it is blue or black you have a problem. ( it's just condensation- hot emissions hitting cold air)
Excessive white smoke could be coolant/water entering the combustion chamber.  Is your coolant level okay?  If it isn't going down then I wouldn't worry about it.
If you remove the oil filler cap (engine not running!) check to see if there is a creamy foamy residue under the cap. If there is, coolant water is getting into your engine oil and needs garage attention.
White sludge in the filler cap doesn't always mean that coolant is leaking into the engine.  An additive to the more expensive oils can form the white sludge if the car is used on short journeys (like internal condensation).  Call it a by-product of the additive.
