Who Has Right of Way......

Waiting to turn right onto a fairly narrow country road. Car opposite me also waiting to turn right. In theory we should move behind each other but no room as road too narrow - so who has automatic right of way??

if the road is that narrow that you cant turn right offside to offside, onw will have to reverse. I would suggest the one who got there last has to reverse

We could both turn right but not by passing behind each other - road only wide enough for one to pass in front of the other whilst the other was still waiting to effect their turn. Who goes first?

in that case, if one was there alrrady, the second one couldn't get into position to turn right, so the one who was there first should go

I'm not sure what is meant here. You are wanting to turn right. Is the car opposte wanting to turn to their right (the oposite way to you) or to your right (the same way as you)?

When turning right at crossroads where an oncoming vehicle is also turning right, there is a choice of two methods

turn right side to right side; keep the other vehicle on your right and turn behind it. This is generally the safer method as you have a clear view of any approaching traffic when completing your turn
left side to left side, turning in front of each other. This can block your view of oncoming vehicles, so take extra care. Cyclists and motorcyclists in particular may be hidden from your view. Road layout, markings or how the other vehicle is positioned can determine which course should be taken

Common sense is at stake here! Let the other car go first His/her direction then when clear you go your direction! Unless the person in the other car has made signal for you to go first. If already both to close to each other then reverse back a bit if they have not already done so to give them room to go first. No one has right of way above the other if the situation is identical on both sides. They use common sence to get past each other without causing collision.

ahhh yes, but roadusers are not supposed to take instructions from anyone but a police officer as ar as i remember from my test (1974) and if a driver does wave you on and you subsequently have an impact then they are not to blame you are

We were on a minor road crossing another not so minor road. Both approaches (his and mine) marked with Give Way signs and broken white lines.

Is this question designed to establish who was at fault for an accident?
If it is just a question of what to do, in practice one person will give way- I've never seen a 'stand off' where no-one moves for hours

Surely common sense and politeness prevail! Similar happens every day when cars are travelling up a road where cars are parked intermittently on both sides - in order to progress up the road, someone has to give way to the other - hopefully it is you half the time and the other person the other half.

It happened today - and there wasn't an accident - I waved him through and then followed executed my right turn. The situation just sparked a hypothetical question between MOH and me. Thanks for your time.

There is no such thing as "right of way" - the highway code tells us when we should give way. You did the right thing.
