My car has been off the road for 18 months, the tax, mot & insurance have expired, do I need to renew the insurance to get the car to the garage for an MOT?
I know I don't need tax as I need the MOT to get the tax but am unsure about the insurance.

No.
Sorry, I misunderstood. You don't need to show your insurance certificate to get your MOT done but you do need insurance to drive it to the garage
You need insurance to drive a car on any public road in the UK.
so what happens if you crash the car on the way to the garage?

bum. that's what I thought, but insurance is so expensive...
You could pay to have it towed to the garage
If you plan to keep the car you will have to insure it sometime!.If not then ask the garage to collect and return it.
If you've got a friendly local garage, ask them to drive your car to the garage for the test. (My local mechanic might well do it for free. Otherwise he'd probably only charge no more than a tenner in total to collect and deliver). Their trade insurance would cover the movement of the vehicle.
Presumably you are taking it to the MOT station with the expectation that the car will pass. The cost of the insurance is irrelevant, it's a necessary part of having a car on the road.
You may also be able to buy a short term 24 hour policy. But won't you want insurance so you can use the car after it passes its MOT?
Yes. You can not drive the car at all or keep it in a public place unless it is insured. You can keep it without insurance if it is SORN but it still has to be off any public highway.
