Waiting at traffic lights a car hit my rear. We exchanged details they accepted liability and everything has been fine. The person who hit me is OK, I am OK and my vehicle has been repaired. Since then I have been told I should tell my insurance about the accident . why?

This wasn't a debatable accident someone drove into the back of someone else at lights - Insurance companies aren't stupid and to keep costs down they'll want to cough up and get open and shut cases sorted with as little overhead as possible.
Thing in you do need to tell your insurence company because although it shouldn't affect your no claims bonus they do take no fault accidents into account when calculating the premium before applying the no claims bonus.
If you don't they could use it as ammunition in trying to wriggle out of a future claim should you and they fall out
